The last day

I watched that day as her skin glowed, luminescent in the daylight as she rested in bed.

Her energy long since depleted, she now spent most of her time lying there,

surrounded by soft and colourful blankets

and the summer sunshine.

Although her face was thin,

her smile could still spread wide across it,

causing me to forget,

for awhile,

that goodbyes were just around the corner.

It’s always hard to watch,

this downward descent into eternity.

While she had long since made peace with her date with destiny,

I couldn’t reconcile how someone so vibrant could just…

fade away.

Paler and thinner by the day,

the last time I saw her she didn’t have a smile,

or even a twinkle in her eye.

Instead, she was sleeping the pain away,

peaceful in her slide into forever.

I never said that goodbye after all
