Picnic and a movie

We had a picnic tonight.

Leftovers on paper plates on a used tablecloth- Princess Sophie, from Sam’s birthday in September.

The children were excited and so grateful- a fun new way to eat supper on the living room floor. I put on a movie from my list of favorites as a child, and watched as they were transported to another place.

Matilda.

The story of an underdog who got her day. A story of children taking back their rights from truly horrible adults.

For the first time, I wondered if that’s where some of the ideas for Harry Potter came from. The similarities were striking, from the home situation to the nemesis.

I sat with my youngest asleep beside me, my oldest screaming “get her!” at the place where the children get the Trunchbull, and my middle yelling, “this is the best movie ever!”

Wonderful memories from childhood. Passing on the inscrutable to the impressionable.

This is one of my favorite parts of parenting
